To enhance the practical focus of our lecture “Data Science: Data Management and Analytics” today we welcomed business intelligence pioneer Nicolas Bissantz and his colleague Gerald Butterwegge. They focused on the “last mile” of management information: how people read, understand, and make use of the findings from data science and analytics. This has a lot to do with visualization.

With many real-world examples from business media and corporate financial communication, Bissantz warned of typical, yet barely known pitfalls in charts and diagrams. These pitfalls make diagrams far less reliable and intuitive than they are said to be – which in the worst case may result in wrong conclusions and decisions. As a solution, Bissantz and Butterwegge suggested the concept of interactive graphical tables and typographically scaled numbers that even work in smartphone apps.

Thanks a lot to today’s speakers and Bissantz & Company for their repeated support of our teaching with interesting practical contributions in various lectures!
