In the 41st issue of Zeit Magazin, the home office situation in the context of the Corona pandemic is discussed in the article series “Alles anders“. In the article “Don’t let the office be taken away from you” the current Recruiting Trends Study, published by the Center of Human Resources Information Systems (CHRIS) and co-authored by Prof. Dr. Sven Laumer, is discussed.

On the one hand, the Corona Pandemic has shown what possibilities digital collaboration offers and how it is widely appreciated by companies and employees alike. Without virtual working, many of the challenges posed by the pandemic would not have been manageable and many elements will remain with us in the post-Corina period. The Recruiting Trends study shows, among other things, that four out of ten members of Generation Z would turn down a job offer if there was no possibility for home office. Moreover, the majority of the study participants also say that one can be more creative in the home office.
On the other hand, there are always discussions about the negative sides of teleworking. Even during Corona, there were (new) challenges in the home office that employees faced. These were already discussed in the pre-Corona period and were addressed in various publications with the participation of Prof. Dr. Sven Laumer. For example, in Recruiting Trends 2015, 75% of the 1,000 largest companies in Germany stated that home office creates new challenges for collaboration within the company. Employees also saw challenges such as the blurring of the boundaries between work and family, fewer social contacts or declining career opportunities (see Recruiting Trends 2015). These challenges also lead to a feeling of stress, both among employees in the home office (see Weinert et al. 2014, 2015), but also to challenges and frustration for those who (have to) continue to work in the traditional office (see Maier et al. 2018).

The series of articles in Zeit Magazin as well as the empirical studies with the participation of Prof. Dr. Sven Laumer show that especially for the post-corona period a discussion is needed about the future significance of the place “office” and how the challenges of the “home office” can be well designed. The discussions and the results of the pre-corona time suggest that the place “office” will continue to have great significance. However, the experiences during Corona also show that many positive experiences have been made in the home office and in virtual working. The current research work of the Schöller Endowed Chair is therefore dedicated to precisely these questions in order to be able to make further contributions to this discussion.
