Digital Life (SoSe 2018)

The seminar focuses on the digitization of the individual and the question of how IT changes individuals, their values, attitudes and behaviors. Within the framework of the seminar, the participants conduct independent studies on scientific questions from the research area of digital life.

Content

Digitization does not only affect companies or public administration. Digitisation also has an impact on people’s lives in general. Digital technologies are penetrating more and more areas of life and changing the way we live, learn and work.

An important reason for this development may be that society has just learned that the “machine” and thus digitization can also be very useful in many areas of life that were previously regarded as purely “human”. Ten years ago, hardly anyone admitted using dating platforms like Tinder, but now as a single person you have to justify not using Tinder. Likewise, a few years ago there was still an impulse reaction to IT-based selection procedures in recruiting that it is inhuman for the computer to decide who is selected for an open position. Today, this is accepted as part of the digitization process and job seekers can automatically recommend job offers on platforms such as Xing or Monster.de.

This development will be reflected in this seminar and the impact of digitization on people’s lives will be examined. Living environments describe different aspects of private life and digital living environments that digital technologies have an influence on these aspects.

Within the framework of the seminar, students should work on their own questions in the field of “digital living environments” and critically reflect on the effects of digital technologies on one of the following aspects:

  • Communication with family and friends
  • Information procurement (media use)
  • Learning at school, work and university
  • Health and Fitness
  • Partner Search (Dating)
  • Search for new jobs and application
  • Privacy Notice and Data Protection
  • Political participation
  • Borders between living and working environments (Work-Home conflict)
  • Leisure (e-Sports)

The exact subject areas and questions will be worked out together with the students in the introductory course.
