Chatbots within the health industry are discussed and researched a lot at the moment. We are also part of the research project EGHI at FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg, funded by the Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung, that investigates the use of context-aware AI in the healthcare context.

Nevertheless, our research about chatbots in healthcare started a couple of years ago, when we started to conduct interviews with various stakeholders. For example, you can find some initial ideas in our ecis2019 paper together with Christian Maier and Fabian Gubler.

On Monday, an article appeared in the Washington Post with Professor Laumer about our research on how chatbots help overloaded healthcare providers and insurances during Covid19 – which might also be one reason for the explosion of their popularity over the past year. Chatbots can study patients’ symptoms, ask them questions, and ultimately direct them to the next step (e.g., see a doctor or take a break).
